After three years of providing connectivity solutions to schools in Kampong Sukang and Kampong Melilas through satellite communication services, Network Integrity Assurance Technologies (NIAT) Sdn. Bhd. officially decommissioned its Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) last August.
In 2021, NIAT joined forces with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Authority for Info-Communication Technology of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) to address a critical challenge: bridging the digital divide in Kampong Sukang and Kampong Melilas. Together, they launched an innovative initiative to provide satellite broadband services to schools in these remote villages, ensuring students could access online learning resources amidst the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This groundbreaking solution not only enabled uninterrupted learning during the crucial period but also highlighted the power of technology in overcoming geographical barriers to education.
Following the installation of a fibre cable network, both villages now benefit from high-speed fiber optic connectivity, a significant step in Brunei’s push towards advancing digital infrastructure. However, this means the end of satellite communication.
As we close the chapter on satellite communication services in Kampong Sukang and Kampong Melilas, we treasure the memories of how this initiative bridged the digital divide during a crucial time. The introduction of high-speed fiber optic connectivity unlocks greater opportunities not only for education but also community development for both villages, reflecting Brunei’s dedication to advancing digital infrastructure.
While we bid farewell to the past, we celebrate the progress that paves the way for a brighter, more connected future.
