NiAT joined GDG DevFest 2022

NiAT Research and Development Unit’s OBSERVE team recently attended Google DevFest Brunei 2022, a local tech conference hosted by Google Developer Group (GDG) and WomenTechMakers Brunei. The event took place at the iCentre Building in Kampong Anggerek Desa on 4th December 2022.

During the event, the team led a workshop titled “Space Technology & Applications for Brunei Darussalam and Building Your First Geospatial Application.” Siti Nur Aazzah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) of NiAT, opened the session with a presentation on space technologies and its application in Brunei. Her talk also pushed the audience to consider the issues currently existing in their environment and their potential actions to address the issue.

Emily Yong Pey Pey, GIS Engineer at NiAT, began her presentation in the second half of the session with a brief explanation of Geospatial Information System (GIS) and how this software can be utilized to tackle real-world issues. The workshop continued with an activity in which participants were tasked with developing a GIS-based web application to address a simulated disaster scenario. Overall, the attendees were impressed and found the topic of space and geospatial technology to be intriguing and relevant to their respective fields. In addition, the majority of them have expressed interest in future GIS-related trainings.
